Description

The City of St. John’s, recognized nationally as an energy innovator, tries to incorporate innovative technologies, including renewable energy systems, in retrofits of municipal buildings. The Mews Centre - a 1970’s vintage multi-userecreational complex owned and operated by the City - offers an opportunity to apply geothermal technology, which israrely economically viable in Newfoundland and Labrador because of the geological constraints of the largely rockterrain. It is estimated that this option, combined with major upgrades to the ventilation, electrical systems and buildingenvelop, will result in a 50 per cent cost savings, an estimated 35 per cent decrease in energy use and a reduction ofover 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
