Description

The District of Kitimat plans to retrofit a pool facility using energy-saving measures to reduce natural gas consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The retrofit will add an additional 585 square metres (m2) to the existing building and include new water, electrical and mechanical systems. The retrofit includes a heat recovery system, low-flow shower heads, and Hi-Lo thermostatic mixing valve. The heat recovery system will use waste heat generated by a nearby ice arena to heat pool water, showers, and washrooms and for space heating. The low-flow shower heads will reduce the amount of water consumed during shower operation. The Hi-Lo thermostatic mixing valve unit will provide constant water temperature to the shower system. The District will also install energy-efficient lighting fixtures, boilers, and pumps, lighting and machinery timers, insulation, water conservation measures, and a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The retrofit will decrease the consumption of natural gas to 2,744 gigajoules (Gj) annually from 10,760 Gj. Existing facility operations release 591,635 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e), whereas the retrofitted facility will have associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of approximately 149,930 kg of CO2e per year.
