Integrated Sustainable Community Plan for the County of Lambton

The County of Lambton developed an integrated strategic sustainable community plan to introduce sustainable practices to the operations of the county and its 11 local municipalities, and to encourage sustainability programs in the community. The planning team visited each region and principal urban centre in the county to research issues and areas of strength in the five key sectors: energy, waste, water, brownfields and transportation. The team established sustainability goals, targets and objectives in all five sectors in consultation with municipal corporate management, staff, the public and stakeholder organizations. The City of Sarnia, as the largest municipality in the county, was also consulted. Consultations took place through staff meetings, public meetings, municipal publications and the county website. Meetings, workshops and training sessions were organized by corporate staff in collaboration with stakeholder and community organizations. Corporate managers assessed the evolving plan to ensure that it was user-friendly, compatible with the corporation’s overall operations and would achieve goals and objectives. The draft document was reviewed at public meetings in urban, rural and First Nations communities. The final plan was expected to include measures to quantify environmental, economic and social progress made in the five sectors. The county plan was complemented by the City of Sarnia’s integrated community sustainability plan. Where appropriate, the other 10 municipalities in Lambton County were to use the county plan as a starting point for preparing their own integrated sustainable community plans.
